I'm looking for a new helmet for track day use. (the one I have is cheapest of the cheap and not snell)
What's a great helmet brand or model that I won't break the bank on? I'm looking at around 200 or less

i have a shoei rf-1100. that's > $200, though. check out various websites. look in the clearance section. there are some rf-1000's going pretty cheap nowadays. they are good helmets. shoei x-11 as well. best thing you can do is a bunch of research. i like some of AGV's helmets as well.

Icon Mainframe, DOT & SNELL. Has large vent system on top that creates lots of headshake above 70, can't recommend it for trackdays.

another member of ours just posted this link: http://sharp.direct.gov.uk/homeit shows several helmets and gives them a protection rating (1 worst - 5 best). some of those helmets arent available in the US, however there are several relly good ones on there that are. a price in pounds is given, but that can be a good gauge on what you would pay here in the states. i would recommend a 4 or 5 star rating for the track. there are a couple AVGs, Sharks, and Scorpions on there that have good ratings that are under $200.

This is your LIFE you are trying to protect here... see, that's one of the good things about that Sharp site above, it shows you the quality you can get for your dollar... it also shows you that more $$$ does not necessarily mean more protection... there are some high dollar helmets that only have 3 starts on that site, while other helmets that are a fifth of the price have 5 star ratings. so more $$$ does not always mean more protection. (could be more "alternate" features, more comfort, more airflow... but not always more protection)

www.motorcyclecloseouts.comI bought last year's HJC (Last year's graphics). DOT certified, fighter-pilot design with the nose guard and flip down UV protective goggles that actuate from a slide on the top. Helmet has the full clear visor with optional tinted or mirrored ones you can order. $99.00 bucks.

Understood... My point was based upon his original comment - so more $$$ does not always mean more protection. (could be more "alternate" features, more comfort, more airflow... but not always more protection) My comment was not to suggest that you spend 17 kazillion dollars on a helmet. It was a result of his comment "(the one I have is cheapest of the cheap and not snell)". Scammers post was right on target - you can get a great Snell certified helmet that may be last years model or graphics at deeply discounted prices. I have one myself. Be aware that the reviews y'all are looking at are based upon the European safety standard...

Hey, I've got a Suomy, Ben Bostrom replica that I need to get rid of. It's snell and dot. Size large with the skull and dagger graphics. I only wore it for about 7 months before my bike got repossed. It's in mint condition, could let it go for 150, paid 500.

I have crash tested, at speed, 2 scorpions and I am still mostly cogent I have been wearing the 707 Vendeta at the track http://www.cyclegear.com/spgm.cfm?L1=50 ... cle_Helmet Its a xl or 2 x I forget which, Its not as comfy on my noggin as the scorps. Get what fits is the key. If it has great ratings, but you hate putting it on, its not a good helmet If this might fit your head I'll sale with the tinted lens for $55 And I'll get another Scorp

I have read most of the helmet safety standards and testing procedures. The SHARP is the most comprehensive of the ones I have reviewed. The older Snell 2005 did not impress me at all. You wound up with a heavier helmet than needed. When you remove all the smoke and mirrors it comes down to one thing - how many Gs is your brain exposed to during a crash.

+1. My Scorpion held up well, and my impact was exactly where the SHARP website gives them a poor rating. Having said that, the sharp site is a great resource which I will use to check out any future purchases. Fencer -- I haven't forgot you on that helmet. Its in my truck at every trackday in case you show again. I'll be at TGP 10th and 11th and Barber 24th.

I am certainly no expert, but it would appear to me that the side impact ratings are the most important. I would think this area is were most crash impacts occur. The difference between a Yellow and an Orange is 100g. That's a lot of g's.

As of last fall, I was using a Joe Rocket Villain. But do to a tumble, I had to throw the JR out and I replaced it with a Scorpion EXO-400. I like the scorpion so much, that I bought another EXO-400 (Chameleon Skullbucket) this spring for the track.
It fits a bit tighter then the JR for the same size.

I have settled on Shark and AGV as my helmets of choice. I had looked at an Arai Profile due to a good review here. http://www.webbikeworld.com/r2/motorcyc ... i-profile/However after looking at the SHARP site I decided to pass on it.The price of a helmet appears to have little influence as to it's safety rating. One thing I found interesting was all of the Bell helmets had 5 star ratings. The bad is none are available in the US.

HJC CL-16 Snell Approved its like 150 is what I wear. I think i need to go down a size theres a bit of wind noise but its not horrible the top vent is great, the front not that good but because it doesnt have a skirt under the chin alot of air come in through the bottom. (which is why I think i get the noise) over all its pretty good. I havent tested how it holds up in a crash and hope I dont have to but if its got the Snell stamp on the back im sure it will keep me alive

Save yourself some grief next time and read the helmet reviews at the above link. You will notice the CL-16 is rated "Loud" as far as noise goes. OTOH I have a FS-15 that is very quiet.
